Bubbly on roses and Pinots on kittens
Bright Bordeaux bottles and warm woolen mittens…

When the holidays bite,

When your hangover stings,

When I’m feeling sad….(because we haven’t winos in a few weeks)

I simply remember my favorite wines,

and then I don’t feel so bad.

To start of 2010 Young Winos style we celebrated with some of Alea’s favorite types of wine. We tasted sparklers, Pinot Noir, and Bordeaux (with a couple outliers of course). Here ’tis:

NV J Vineyards Cuvée 20 (Russian River Valley, Sonoma County), $22.
On the nose, Ellen got pear and Kelly got citrus biscuit, to which Dave asked, “Does it smell leavened?”
Katie got lemon water on the palate and Kelly found it limey and crisp.
Rating: 7/10

NV M. Lawrence “Sex” Brut Rosé (Michigan),$18.
Ellen smelled peach gummies on the nose, Katie picked up a floral component, Kevin got hibiscus, and Alea found mild honeysuckle.
Kelly thought the palate had lower acidity than the J, Adam got pear, Jessalyn got juicy pear and jelly bean, Dave got a tinny sharpness, Ellen got honey with notes of Lady Gaga. Kelly also thought it tasting like licking and-or motorboating a virgin. The wine is called Sex, remember?
Rating: 7/10

NV Piper Sonoma, Brut (Sonoma County), $14.
Dave thought it smelled more like a traditional Champagne. Ellen smelled musty deviled ham. Alea got dirty sheets. Colin got salty cured meat while Kelly got ham and a good kind of stinky charcuterie.
Katie thought the palate tasted better than it smelled and found it kinda sweet. Kevin got sour lemon rind. Dave got pith. Ellen got salty and Colin got cucumber.
Rating 5.5/10

NV Roederer Estate, Brut (Anderson Valley), $20.
On the nose, Kelly got yeasty, leesy, nuts. (Get your mind out of the gutter, these are sparkling wine descriptors…) Alea smelled bubbles. Colin got coconut and freakin vanilla. Dave guessed “elderflower?,” and Alea said “NO!”
The palate was a little butterscotchy to Alea. Kelly found it toasty and Dave didn’t think there was much going on besides a hint of lime.
Rating 6.5/10

2007 Cep Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast), $24.
Colin smelled leather factory on the nose. Kelly got oak and black cherry, as well as cocaine, drugs, and guitar. The nose rocked. Dave smelled love. Katie thought it had the best nose ever, with notes of cigar and potting soil (in a good way). Alea thought it smelled like nutrients, blueberry, and blackberry soda.
As for the palate, Katie got planks of wood in Home Depot, Ellen got leather chair in an old library (NOT a public library, a private one…). Kevin got prune and Colin got brie rind.
Rating: 8/10

Cep T

2005 Fetzer Family “Winemaker’s Reserve” (Russian River Valley),  $??.
Colin got department store carpet and Kelly got fruity carpet on the nose. Dave got fruit roll-up(!) and turpentine. Katie got rotting plums and cinnamon. Alea thought it was a little hot from alcohol on the nose.
Damn near e’erbody thought the palate seemed watered down. Katie got pomegranate. Dave thought it was a little hollow but had an amazing finish.
Rating: 7/10

2006 Moulin de la Gardette “Cuvée Ventabren” (Gigondas, France), $35.
This blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault lent notes of dark berry pepper to Alea, blackberry and BBQ maple syrup to Kelly (who wanted to pair a zin with the smell), blackberry seconded by Ellen, syrup with a dark undercurrent by Colin, alcohol by Jessalyn, fresh red onion by Katie, and butterscotch apricots to Kevin.
The palate was hotter than a celebrity sex tape. Katie said it was super hot (“stings like a bee”), Alea found it way hot, and Colin thought it was hot like a Manhattan. Kelly got a bunch of fruit, like boysenberry an raspberry, leading to some pepper spice, structure, and tannin, and finally alcohol that was certainly noticeable but not overwhelming. Jessalyn got cherry Robitussin with pine tree. A very interesting wine to say the least.
Rating: 8.5/10

One of the birthday girls (the one with the tiara)

2008 Chateau de Brandey (Bordeaux), $20(?).
Katie got cherry on the nose. Ellen got medium-aged library book, continuing her theme of literary sillyness. Jessalyn got coconut and burnt sugar cookie. Colin got sour and creme brulée. Alea got burnt ham and Kelly got cassis and vanilla.
Jessalyn got raspberry yogurt on the palate. Katie got green apple or unripe fruit. Ellen found it jammy. Kelly thought it tasted like a zinfandel made in Bordeaux with unripe black fruit and plum. He thought they probably picked the grapes a little too early. Colin got a distinctive old world taste.
Rating: 6.5/10

Finally, Quote of the Night: “If we took all the male winos sperm and all the female winos eggs and shook it up and just see what [kind of child would result]… that would be funny.” – Katie
