Burgundy is made from the ancient grandparents of wine we know today…

White = Chardonnay
Red = Pinot noir
Occasionally Aligote (a very minor grape)

1. 2007 Domaine Faiveley, Montagny
Nose: butter popcorn, sweet hay, brie rind, nutty, hazelnuts, apple
Palate: bitty, lemony, butterscotch, lemon-cucumber water
Rating: 6/10, $21

4 levels of AOC in Burgundy:

  1. Lowest level = AOC Burgundy/Bourgogne
  2. Villages = by name of village
  3. Premiere cru = vineyard specific
  4. Grand Cru = vineyard and specially selected 1861

2. 2007 Bourgogne Aligote, Jayer-Gilles
Nose: powered sugar, lime, green apple, minerality, cold stone, smells like crisp, dave’s eyes watered
Palate: lime, lemon grass, thin, blending wine, cotton candy in mid-palate
Rating: 5/10, $23

3. 2006 Savigny-les-Beaune, Premiere Cru Les Vergelesses, Nicolas Potel
Nose: port, happy, umami, poo, barnyard, furred cherries
Palate: dark and stormy, cranberry and dirt, cranberry and poison, licorice/menthol/eucalyptus
Rating: 7.5/10, $40

4. 2008 Les Fichots, Pernand-Vergelesses premiere Cru Maison
Nose: smokey wood chips, smells like soy sauce, crayon, umami, waxiness, roasted nuts, ham sandwich
Palate: thin but smooth, first taste kicked me in the face like a horse (in a good way) smoke, coca cola, nutmeg
Rating: 7/10, $20

5. 2009 “Les Boutieres” Pernand-Vergelesses, AOC Vielles Vignes Reserve
Nose: dark cherry, cherry cola, raspberry, sassafras, artificial red candy
Palate: cherry, earthiness, vanilla creme on finish

6. 2007 Olivier Guyot Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Nose: asparagus, green pepper, slightly dirty, burnt licorice
Palate: 🙂 cherry
